Mars: Forge World of the Machine God

Older than the Imperium it serves, the Forge World of Mars turns a dull red beneath a thin and poisoned sky, its surface a near-unbroken sprawl of foundries, refineries, and reactor-stacks. This is the holiest ground of the Adeptus Mechanicus, the tech-priesthood who venerate knowledge as divinity and machinery as the flesh of a slumbering god. From here their black-robed magi have guided human science for longer than the Emperor's empire has existed.

The First Forge World[edit]

Mars is the eldest and greatest of all Forge Worlds, the template from which every other has been struck. Almost every scrap of its surface has been given over to production; its canyons are choked with cabling, its plains bristle with manufactory-spires, and its ancient canals carry coolant and effluent between reactors that have burned without pause for millennia.

The Red Planet was terraformed into a green and breathable world during the Dark Age of Technology, then abandoned to ruin in the long nightmare of Old Night. When its borrowed atmosphere failed, Mars returned to rust and cold, and its people chose to reforge their own bodies with augmetics rather than remake the sky.

The Cult of the Machine God[edit]

The Adeptus Mechanicus does not worship the Emperor as the rest of the Imperium does. Its faith is the Cult Mechanicus, the veneration of the Machine God, the Omnissiah, a deity of logic and creation whom the priesthood believes to be the guiding spirit within all technology. Every device possesses a machine-spirit that must be appeased with sacred oils, incantations, and reverence.

This creed predates the Imperium entirely. Once known as the Mechanicum of Mars, the priesthood ruled the Red Planet as an independent power throughout the Age of Strife, hoarding the wisdom of a fallen golden age. Its central obsession is the Quest for Knowledge, the endless recovery of lost science, and above all the sacred Standard Template Construct designs that once let humanity build wonders now far beyond its reach.

The Covenant with Terra[edit]

When the Emperor emerged from the Unification Wars to reunite Terra, He turned at once to Mars, knowing that no galactic empire could be forged without the industry of the tech-priests. The two powers sealed their union in the Treaty of Mars, remembered by the priesthood as the Treaty of Olympus Mons, binding Throneworld and Forge World together at the very dawn of the Imperium.

By its terms the Mechanicus retained its ancient religion, its autonomy, and its monopoly on technology, in exchange for arming the Emperor's crusade. Ten thousand years later that bargain still holds. The Mechanicus builds the Imperium's warships, weapons, and war-engines, and in return is left free to pursue its own cold and secretive faith.

The Noctis Labyrinth[edit]

Amid the tangled canyons between the Valles Marineris and the Tharsis highlands lies the Noctis Labyrinth, the Labyrinth of Night, a maze of steep-walled valleys shunned by all but the boldest magi. Its geography seems almost designed to swallow the unwary, and the deepest of its vaults are sealed by decrees that reach back to the very founding of the Imperium.

Legend holds that something sleeps beneath the Labyrinth: the Dragon of Mars, an entity of terrible power that the priesthood both dreads and secretly reveres. Many believe it to be the Void Dragon, one of the ancient star-gods called the C'tan, kin to the soulless horrors that animate the Necrons, said to have been imprisoned in the planet's depths by the Emperor Himself. Should it ever wake, the tech-priests whisper, Mars and all its works would be undone.

The Forges of a Thousand Worlds[edit]

Mars is only the heart of a far greater body. The Mechanicus commands countless Forge Worlds across the galaxy, each a fief in its own right, yet all owe fealty to the Red Planet and to the Fabricator-General who rules from beneath the shadow of Olympus Mons. He sits among the High Lords of Terra, one of the most powerful individuals in the Imperium.

To defend its holdings the priesthood fields armies of its own: the cybernetic legions of the Skitarii and the colossal war-engines of the Titan Legions, whose tread can level cities. These forces answer to Mars alone, a standing reminder that the Mechanicus is less a servant of the Imperium than a mighty ally that chooses, for now, to stand at its side.

The Keepers of the Machine[edit]

For all its might, the Mechanicus is a priesthood in slow decline, far better at preserving old miracles than at conceiving new ones. Its magi replicate the designs of their forebears without truly grasping them, and to invent something new is condemned as a dangerous heresy against the perfection of the past.

Yet without Mars the Imperium would grind to a halt within a single generation. Every bolt-round fired, every warship launched, every suit of power armour worn is owed in some measure to the tireless forges of the Red Planet. Mars is the workshop of a dying civilisation, and its tech-priests are the grim custodians who keep the great machine of empire turning long after the knowledge to build it anew has been lost.
