The Cursed Founding

The Adeptus Astartes are the Imperium's finest weapon, and every one of them is grown from a sacred, dwindling inheritance: the gene-seed handed down from the Emperor's own sons. Now and again, across the long millennia, the Imperium undertakes a great Founding to raise new Chapters and swell the ranks of its Space Marines. Most are unremarkable. One is remembered with dread. The 21st Founding, called ever after the Cursed Founding, produced Chapters so blighted by unstable gene-seed that many were consumed by mutation, madness, and fates too grim to commit fully to record. Even now, ten thousand years later, the name is spoken warily in the fortress-monasteries, a standing warning against pride and against the temptation to meddle with the Emperor's design.

The Founding of Chapters[edit]

To understand the curse, one must understand the Founding. Since the earliest days after the Horus Heresy, the Space Marines have been organised according to the Codex Astartes, the great treatise that broke the old Legions into smaller, self-contained Chapters. When the Imperium wishes to create new Chapters, it authorises a Founding, drawing upon carefully cultivated stocks of gene-seed, the organs and genetic templates, described in the lore of gene-seed and the making of a Space Marine, that transform an ordinary aspirant into a transhuman warrior. A typical Founding might raise a couple of dozen Chapters, each gifted a portion of that hoarded genetic wealth and sent forth to make war in the Emperor's name. Each Founding is a solemn undertaking, for gene-seed is finite, precious, and perilously easy to corrupt.

The Twenty-First Founding[edit]

The Cursed Founding took place in the 36th Millennium, an age of turmoil for the Imperium. Its purpose, as far as the expunged and contradictory records allow, was ambitious in the extreme. Rather than simply propagate proven gene-lines, those who ordered the Founding sanctioned experimentation, attempts to purify tainted stock, to accelerate cultivation, or to engineer new strains of warrior with the aid of the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus. It was an act of hubris, a belief that the sacred templates left by the primarchs could be improved upon by mortal hands. The gene-seed remembered the insult, and the Chapters raised from that meddled inheritance would carry its consequences in their very flesh. Some inquisitors have since wondered whether darker hands guided the work, whether the flaws were accident or sabotage, and whether some of the meddling drew upon forbidden lore better left buried. The truth was scrubbed from the archives along with the names of many of the Chapters it doomed, and though perhaps two dozen were raised in that Founding, even that number is now disputed.

The Mark of the Curse[edit]

The most infamous of the Cursed Founding's children are the Black Dragons. In these warriors, the organs that ordinarily regulate the growth of the skeleton run wild, driving jagged blades of bone to erupt from their forearms and crowning their skulls with horns of living calcium. The Chapter learned to sharpen and even sheathe these grotesque growths in adamantium, turning a mutation into a weapon, yet the Inquisition has always watched them with narrowed eyes, for the line between a sanctioned quirk and a damnable mutation is a thin and shifting one. That the Black Dragons endure at all is a testament to their iron discipline, for a lesser Chapter bearing such open stigmata would long since have been declared anathema and given to the flame. To bear a visible deviation from the Emperor's template, however useful in battle, is to live forever under suspicion.

Fire and Misfortune[edit]

Other Chapters fared worse. The Flame Falcons were doomed by a gene-flaw crueller still: their bodies would, without warning, erupt into unquenchable flame, immolating the warrior in an inferno that no armour could contain. A Chapter whose sons burn alive from within has no future, and the Flame Falcons were ultimately branded traitor and hunted to their end. Others, such as the ill-starred Lamenters, were cursed less in the flesh than in their fate, a bloodline shadowed by catastrophe and ruinous ill-fortune that followed every act of heroism with disaster, until their very name became a byword for noble sacrifice unrewarded. Yet they bore their misfortune with a mournful grace, accepting penance and near-annihilation without ever once turning from the Emperor's light, and in their sorrow they became the most tragic of all the Cursed Founding's sons. Whether by fire, madness, or sheer relentless misfortune, the Cursed Founding's failures were many, and a number of its Chapters simply vanished from the records altogether.

Flesh Made Wrong[edit]

Not every mutation was a death sentence. The Sons of Antaeus, another reputed child of the Cursed Founding, were afflicted with a runaway densification of muscle and bone that made their bodies enormously heavy and near-impervious to harm, a curse that doubled as a grim gift, rendering them among the most physically resilient warriors ever to wear power armour. Yet even a beneficial deviation is still a deviation, and such Chapters kept to themselves, wary of the scrutiny that any departure from the standard invited. The lesson of the Cursed Founding was written across all its children alike: to tamper with the gene-seed is to gamble, and the dice are weighted toward ruin.

The Fragility of the Gene-Seed[edit]

What the Cursed Founding truly reveals is how delicate the miracle of the Space Marine really is. The gene-seed is not a machine part that can be freely re-engineered; it is a sacred and imperfectly understood inheritance, each strain a fading echo of a primarch's design, already prone to flaw and decay after ten thousand years of copying. Push it, hurry it, or try to improve it, and it answers with horror. The catastrophe of the 21st Founding is the reason the Imperium guards its gene-seed with fanatical caution, tithing it, testing it, and enshrining it as a relic, for the same fragility that spawned the Black Dragons and the Flame Falcons is the same fragility that, taken to its darkest end, produced the mutant horrors of the Horus Heresy. It is a sobering truth that the gulf between a hero of the Imperium and a mutant abomination fit only for the pyre may be nothing more than a few flawed strands within a single sacred organ. Every Chapter walks a razor's edge between the Emperor's gift and the abyss of corruption, and the Cursed Founding is the monument to what waits below.
