The rank of Watch Master crowns a lifetime of service against the alien. Only warriors of exceptional experience and judgement rise to this station, and those who do carry the accumulated wisdom of countless campaigns against every manner of xenos foe. A Watch Master oversees the operations of a Watch Fortress, deciding where kill teams deploy, which threats demand immediate answer, and how the ceaseless war against the aliens is to be waged.

Yet a Watch Master is no distant strategist. These commanders lead from the front, their armour bearing the marks of centuries of battle and their weapons among the finest in the order's armoury. In the field they serve as the linchpin of a kill team, their tactical genius turning a difficult engagement into a decisive victory and their presence steeling the warriors around them. A Watch Master knows the enemy as few others can, having faced tyranid, necron, aeldari, and ork across a lifetime of war, and he wields that knowledge as surely as any blade. To serve under a Watch Master is to fight beside the living memory of the Deathwatch itself.
