The Legion Rapier Weapons Battery was a formation of compact, tracked weapons carriers, each crewed by legionaries and mounting a heavy weapon too cumbersome for a warrior to carry into a sustained firefight. The Ultramarines made careful use of them, for the Rapier suited a Legion that thought in terms of interlocking fields of fire and layered defence. Armed with laser destroyers to gut enemy armour, quad launchers to blanket infantry, or graviton cannon to pin the heaviest foes, a Rapier battery could be tailored precisely to the threat a battle presented. Positioned with the forethought that marked all of Guilliman's warfare, they lent the line a versatile core of firepower that could be shifted and concentrated as the situation demanded. Unglamorous but invaluable, the Rapiers were the quiet mathematics of the XIII's defence, the weapons that made an Ultramarian position so costly to assault.
