Duke Crakmarrow understands himself perfectly: a huntsman-lord of impeccable lineage, sworn to defend the innocent from the monsters of the wild places. His Grymwatch (loyal retainers he knows as squires, beaters, and stout yeomen with nets and torches) follow him on quest after quest at their king's behest, running the realms' terrors to ground and returning to court laden with trophies for the royal table.
The dark comedy of the Grymwatch is that they are, on occasion, exactly what they believe. Crakmarrow's company has dragged down horrors that garrisons could not (real monsters, slain in real defense of real villages), and there are settlements in the wild places that owe their survival to a hunt they still recount by firelight. The tales always end early, before the rescuers' feast begins. The Duke rides on regardless, luminous with purpose: the truest knight the delusion has ever produced, and the surest proof that this makes no difference at all.
