The Battle for Macragge

In the closing centuries of the 41st Millennium, a horror without precedent broke upon the Eastern Fringe of the galaxy. From the cold void between the stars came Hive Fleet Behemoth, the first great tendril of the Tyranid menace to reach the worlds of the Imperium. Its hunger carried it toward Ultramar, the proud realm of the Ultramarines, and the defence of their capital world of Macragge would become the most desperate battle the Chapter had ever fought.

The Coming of the Great Devourer[edit]

The Tyranids were a xenos species unlike anything mankind had yet encountered: not a rival empire but a living famine, a migratory swarm that stripped whole worlds of biomass and moved on. Hive Fleet Behemoth surged into the galaxy around 745.M41, its countless bio-ships driven by a single vast and alien will.

The conflict it began is remembered as the First Tyrannic War, humanity's earliest true reckoning with the Great Devourer. The tendril's course led it directly against Ultramar, and at the heart of that realm lay Macragge, home of the Emperor's most storied Chapter.

A World Made Ready[edit]

Chapter Master Marneus Calgar judged Macragge to be the system most gravely imperilled, and he ordered its already formidable defences strengthened to the utmost. Orbital weapon platforms, the massed warships of the Ultramar Defence Fleet, and the Chapter's own battle barges were marshalled into a great fleet to contest the approaches.

Should the war in orbit be lost, Calgar prepared a grim contingency. The defenders would fall back to two immense fortresses raised at the planet's northern and southern poles, there to endure until an Imperial relief force could reach the beleaguered system.

The War in the Void[edit]

The battle in space proved catastrophic. Wave upon wave of bio-ships hurled themselves against the defenders, careless of loss, until the sheer weight of numbers began to tell. By the twelfth assault the orbital defences of Macragge had been all but obliterated, and the void surrendered to the swarm.

With the high orbitals broken, the Tyranids poured down upon the planet. They seeded the surface with countless mycetic spores, each a living pod that split open to disgorge ravening broods across the world. The ground war had begun, and it favoured the invader.

The Stand at the Polar Fortresses[edit]

As their commander had foreseen, the surviving defenders withdrew to the great bastions at the poles. There the veteran First Company, clad in the hallowed plate of Tactical Dreadnought armour, formed the core of the defence alongside the planet's regiments of defence troops.

The hive mind answered by raining thousands of spores directly onto the fortresses, drowning the walls in a tide of chitin and claw. The defenders held their ground amid the carnage, buying with every hour the time their Chapter so desperately needed.

The Sacrifice of the First Company[edit]

The First Company held to the last. When the fighting finally ceased, the Chapter's most experienced warriors were found where they had made their stand, weapons still in their hands, surrounded by the ruin of the foes they had slain. Not one survived.

It was a loss the Ultramarines could scarcely bear: an entire company of veterans annihilated in a single campaign. Yet their sacrifice had not been in vain, for the hours they purchased allowed salvation to arrive from the stars.

The Destruction of Behemoth[edit]

The turning point came with the arrival of a powerful Imperial battlefleet, summoned across the void to Ultramar's aid. Joining with the Ultramarines' surviving warships, this armada fell upon Hive Fleet Behemoth in the skies above Macragge and shattered it in a storm of lance fire and torpedoes.

Deprived of the swarms that had died upon the planet below and the ships broken in orbit, the hive fleet came apart. Behemoth was destroyed above the very world it had sought to consume, and with its ending the First Tyrannic War was won.

The Long Shadow of Victory[edit]

The triumph ranked among the costliest in the Chapter's long history. The destruction of the entire First Company was a wound that would take more than a hundred years to heal; its strength remained below half until 841.M41, and the losses were not accounted fully replaced until 861.M41.

Chaplain Ortan Cassius, whose loathing of the Tyranids burned without limit, gathered the survivors of the war into a cadre of Tyrannic War Veterans, so that hard-won knowledge of the foe would never be lost. For Behemoth had been only the first tendril. Other hive fleets would follow, and the galaxy had learned to dread the coming of the Great Devourer.
